Legacy in Motion: The Stories That Carry Us Forward
As the season of giving begins, the CAP Foundation is proud to celebrate the individuals whose legacy gifts have shaped our mission, strengthened our programs, and expanded our impact around the world. Legacy givers are more than donors, they are visionaries who plant seeds that continue to grow long after their gift is made. Their generosity shapes the future of pathology and ensures that the CAP Foundation can meet the needs of patients and communities for generations to come.
Two such leaders, Gerald Hanson, MD, FCAP and Alvin Ring, MD, FCAP exemplify the power of legacy giving.
Dr. Gerald Hanson, recipient of the CAP Foundation’s first Equity in Pathology Award, understood early on that equitable diagnostics must be a global commitment. In 2020, he created the Global Pathology Fund, one of the Foundation’s most meaningful legacy gifts. His gift initiated international outreach efforts that now help advance pathology services in under-resourced countries worldwide.
Because of his commitment, the CAP Foundation’s Global Pathology Development Grant and Global Pathology Education Award now support projects and training across multiple continents. Dr. Hanson’s legacy is a living one: improving patient care, advancing laboratory quality, and expanding access to diagnostics for communities that need it most.
Dr. Alvin Ring, recipient of the CAP Foundation’s first Philanthropic Visionary Award, embodies another area of legacy giving, one built on gratitude and the desire to lift up future generations. Reflecting on his own career, Dr. Ring often speaks about the support, guidance, and professional growth he found through the CAP and CAP Foundation. Today, he is committed to paying that support forward through the establishment of the Alvin Ring, MD, FCAP Future Leader’s Fund supporting residents, fellows, and medical students in accessing leadership and educational programs. His legacy ensures that emerging pathologists have opportunities that shape their careers and strengthen the profession as a whole.
Legacy donors ensure that the CAP Foundation can meet challenges not just today, but for years to come. Their gifts sustain programs, spark innovation, and allow the CAP Foundation to take on opportunities that otherwise would remain out of reach.
And now, as the CAP Foundation looks ahead, we are entering the era of legacy: a moment where the stories we tell, the programs we build and the lives we touch are made possible by those who choose to leave something lasting behind. This is the heart of our Stories We’ll Tell Forever campaign. It marks a new chapter, one where donors like Dr. Hanson and Dr. Ring ensure that future generations inherit an even stronger, more compassionate, more capable pathology community.
Their stories will be told forever. Not because of what they gave, but because of what their gifts made possible.
And through continued legacy support from donors like you, we can transform tomorrow’s needs into tomorrow’s successes, creating healthier, more equitable communities across the globe.
