PATHOLOGY RESIDENTS

Overview
Among the CAP Foundation’s most enduring programs, the Leadership Development Award introduces
pathology residents to the specialty’s issues and leadership opportunities at the institutional, local, state, and
national levels. The award enhances each recipient’s education and experience on issues challenging the
practice of pathology.

Two cycles of funding are available to cover one of the following:

Spring Cycle – Pathology Residents
Funding is available for pathology residents to attend the:

Fall Cycle – Pathology Residents
Funding is available for pathology residents to attend the:

  •  Fall CAP Residents Forum (travel expenses up to $1,200) – Oct 3, 2026, Las Vegas, NV
  •  CAP’s Engaged Leadership Academy (ELA) (registration fee up to $400) – November 2026,
    Northfield, IL
  •  NOTE: Travel costs associated with attending the ELA program, including airfare, hotel, meals not
    provided during the program, will be paid by the participant.

NEW-IN-PRACTICE FELLOWS

Overview
Among the CAP Foundation’s most enduring programs, the Leadership Development Award offers
new in practice fellows the opportunity to participate in the CAP’s Engaged Leadership
Academy (ELA), a communication and leadership course exclusively for CAP members to
develop skills not learned in clinical training.

In this practical, interactive weekend workshop, members improve communication and public
speaking skills, increase their confidence to lead their institutions, and practice the nuances to
effectively engage clinical colleagues, administrators, government agencies, and advocacy
groups.

Eligibility

PATHOLOGY RESIDENTS

ELIGIBILITY

Pathology Residents who are actively enrolled in an accredited US or Canadian pathology residency program.

Applicants will be considered regardless of age, race, gender, national origin, or religion.

Applicants should have authorization from their institution to attend the meetings. Awardees and/or their
institutions should expect to cover any travel costs that exceed the amount awarded.

 

NEW-IN-PRACTICE FELLOWS

ELIGIBILITY

All new in practice CAP Fellows (1 to 5 years) may apply.

Applicants will be considered regardless of age, race, gender, national origin, or religion.

Applicants should have authorization from their institution to attend the meetings. Awardees and/or their
institutions should expect to cover any travel costs that exceed the amount awarded.

Pathology Residents

1. The signature of your residency program director or department chair (invite this individual as a
collaborator on your application)

2. Responses to the following:

  • Your interest in leadership, professional development, and/or health policy and how this interest
    enhances your ability to articulate your value as a pathologist
  • Your goals for attending the meeting
  • Your plan to share and apply knowledge gained
  • Why the award is essential to you, the applicant
  • Why you require foundation financial support

3. Curriculum Vitae

4. Professional Headshot (1+ megabyte; color; with or without lab coat; neutral background; the photo you
submit to be used in web and print media for award recognition; no selfies please)

5. Letter of recommendation from your residency program director or department chair discussing:

  • How you would benefit from receiving this award.
  • Your demonstration of leadership skills along with your interest in/knowledge of the issues
    facing the field of pathology

  •  photos of you at the event (individual and group shots)
  •  a brief video testimonial

The CAP Foundation may also communicate the bestowing of this award and content from your evaluation
form or video testimonial for future promotional purposes with CAP members and donors via the Foundation
website, social media channels, newsletter, or annual report.
