January Is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month: A Call to Prioritize Your Health
Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide, yet it’s largely preventable. However, many women—especially in underserved communities—are not getting the screening they need.
A significant barrier to preventive screenings isn’t just access- it’s priorities. Many women, particularly caregivers, often place their own health last, thinking, I’m fine; I’ll get checked later.’ Unfortunately, later often turns into never. This is further compounded by challenges like transportation, language barriers, and limited access to healthcare services, which make it even harder for some women to prioritize their well-being.
The CAP Foundation’s See, Test & Treat program works to eliminate these barriers. Led by pathologists, it brings free cervical and breast cancer screenings to medically underserved communities, ensuring women have access to care without worrying about financial costs, language barriers, or waiting weeks for results.
The power of See, Test & Treat lies within the personalization volunteers provide. At a See, Test & Treat program you are not just a number in a waiting room, your health, your needs are a priority.
For example, a woman at a Boston area program with a history of traumatic and painful Pap tests was hesitant to participate. She knew how important the test was for cancer prevention, but the fear of pain was overwhelming. After discussing her concerns with the program providers, they invited her to come in outside of the event to administer light anesthesia during the procedure. This approach made the test much more comfortable for her, and she was able to complete the screening.
Patients leave See, Test & Treat feeling empowered, they are catalyst for driving health prevention screening for their families as well. It is a program that highlights the importance of putting on your own oxygen mask first.
Programs like See, Test & Treat are here to support you—and they rely on your donations to continue their life-saving work. By donating today, you help ensure that free screenings, same-day results, and compassionate care reach women who need it most. Your generosity can save lives. This Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, the message is clear: Your health matters.
