Foundation Welcomes New Leaders

On October 7, the CAP Foundation Board of Directors met in New Orleans before the CAP22 annual meeting to approve several new initiatives, grants, and awards that will keep the CAP Foundation on track toward achieving its goals going into 2023.

The board also officially passed leadership on to a new president and vice president and helped formally welcome a new staff executive director. Eva M. Wojcik, MD, FCAP, is the chair of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, an endowed professor of pathology and urology, and medical director of the Regional Laboratory at Loyola University Medical Center.

She is a renowned pathologist who has a special interest in genito-urinary cytopathology. Dr. Wojcik is certified in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology as well as cytopathology by the American Board of Pathology.

A past president of the American Society of Cytopathology, Dr. Wojcik is currently an associate editor of the society’s journal. She also serves on editorial boards for Diagnostic Cytopathology and the Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.

Dr. Wojcik has been a frequently invited speaker at numerous international, national, and regional forums. She led international efforts to standardize reporting of urinary cytology that culminated with the publication of The Paris System for Reporting Urinary Cytology.

An active member of the CAP and CAP Foundation, Dr. Wojcik has acted as lead pathologist for seven See, Test & Treat programs at Loyola University Medical Center.

Bharati Jhaveri, MD, FCAP, is a pathologist and past chair and medical director of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield, Illinois. She served as a clinical professor at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield. She also served as a member of the hospital foundation board for nine years.

Certified by the American Board of Pathology, Dr. Jhaveri has specialty boards in cytopathology. She received her medical degree from the University of Bombay, in Mumbai, India, and completed her pathology training at Wayne State University in Detroit.

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Jhaveri has served on numerous committees and councils for the CAP. She served as chair of both the Council on Membership and Professional Development and the Council on Accreditation. She has served on several CAP committees including those for Accreditation, Finance/Compensation, and International Steering.

Dr. Jhaveri most recently served as chair of the 2021 Empowering Our Future fundraising campaign and established the Drs. Bharati and Suketu Jhaveri Scientific Education and Research Fund, which was approved by the CAP Foundation Board in April of 2022.

Foundation board members serve a two-year term. Dr. Wojcik and Dr. Jhaveri will maintain their positions as president and vice president until the 2025 CAP annual meeting.

Maya joined the CAP in 2015 as the manager of grants and served as the manager for capability and specialty advancement prior to being promoted to senior manager of alliances in 2019. She most recently served as the senior manager of contracts before accepting the position of executive director with the CAP Foundation.

Beginning her new role in May 2022, Maya serves as the staff lead to the CAP Foundation’s Board of Directors and the Foundation staff team, with a focus on achieving the goals outlined in the Foundation’s Strategic Plan.

Prior to joining the CAP, Maya held a number of leadership roles in nonprofit organizations supporting both development and fundraising. Maya has served as the board membership chair for the Chicago Grant Professional Association and is a member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. She is also a graduate of Indiana School of Law Indianapolis focusing on pharmaceutical and criminal law.

Outside work, Maya loves spending time with her daughter Celeste singing “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” and learning the words to “The Family Madrigal” from Encanto.
