Summer Cycle – New In Practice Fellows
Leadership Development Award 2025 Summer Cycle – Engaged Leadership Academy (ELA)
Introduces new in practice CAP Fellow members (1 to 5 years) to the specialty’s issues and leadership opportunities at the institutional, local, state, and national levels. The Engaged Leadership Academy focuses on creatives, makers, innovators, advocates, entrepreneurs, and those who want to make a difference in the pathology community enhancing attendee education, professional development and experience on issues challenging the pathology specialty.
Location: CAP Headquarters in Northfield, IL
Date and Time: June 28-29, 2025
Funding is available for the following:
- Registration fee and expenses, up to $500, for CAP Fellows (new in practice pathologists; 1 to 5 years) to attend the Engaged Leadership Academy, (a professional development and leadership course).
- All costs associated with the program, including travel, hotel, meals not provided during the program, will be paid by the participant.
Fall Cycle – Pathology Residents
Among the CAP Foundation’s most enduring programs, the Leadership Development Award introduces pathology residents to the specialty’s issues and leadership opportunities at the institutional, local, state, and national levels. The award enhances each recipient’s education and experience on issues challenging the practice of pathology.
Funding is available for pathology residents to cover one of the following:
- Travel expenses of up to $1,200 to attend the Fall CAP Residents Forum, taking place on September 13, 2025, in Orlando, FL.
- A registration fee of $400 for the Engaged Leadership Academy (ELA), a professional development and leadership course taking place at the CAP Headquarters in Northfield, Illinois, November 2025. NOTE: All costs associated with the ELA, including travel, hotel, meals not provided during the program, will be paid by the participant. Additional details will be posted as they become available.
If Selected
Awardees are required to submit a short evaluation form within 10 days of meeting attendance.
The CAP Foundation may also communicate the bestowing of this award and content from your evaluation form for future promotional purposes with CAP members and donors via the Foundation website, social media channels, newsletter, or annual report.
All applicants will be considered regardless of age, race, gender, national origin, or religion.

Please include the following with your completed application:
- The signature of your residency program director or department chair (invite this individual as a collaborator on your application)
- An essay of up to 750 words discussing*:
- Your interest in leadership, professional development, and/or health policy and how this interest enhances your ability to articulate your value as a pathologist
- Your goals for attending the meeting
- Your plan to share and apply knowledge gained
- Why the award is essential to you, the applicant
- Why you require foundation financial support
- Curriculum Vitae
- Professional headshot for use in Foundation web and print media (Requirements: 1+ megabyte, color, professional dress, neutral background; no selfies please)
- Letter of recommendation from your residency program director or department chair discussing:
- How you would benefit from receiving this award
- Your demonstration of leadership skills along with your interest in/knowledge of the issues facing the field of pathology
*Applicants that do not address the above items in their application essay will not be considered.
Spring Cycle – Pathology Residents
Funding to cover travel expenses of up to $1,200 is available for pathology residents to attend the to attend the CAP Spring Residents Forum (March 22, 2025; Boston, MA) or the Pathologists Leadership Summit (April 26-29, 2025; Washington, DC). The intent of this award is to support in-person meeting attendance; each awardee will be paired with a mentor.
Fall Cycle – Fellows
Funding is available, up to $500, for CAP Fellows in practice 1–5 years to cover the ELA registration fee and misc. expenses.
